Outdoors: Hiking trail

  • From short afternoon hikes to weeks-long adventures through the backcountry, the Mountainsto-Sea Trail offers one of the most diverse and expansive trails in the Southeast. Although the full trail (a 1000-mile path stretching from Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains to North Carolina’s Outer Banks) is still under construction, more than 500 miles already crisscross towering hardwood forests, churning mountain rivers, low-lying swamps and historic rural towns. And the best part? Some of its best sections are located in Asheville’s backyard, accessible from the Folk Art Center trailhead. — D.S.
