Outdoors: Bike race

  • Now in its ninth year, the Fletcher Flyer is one of the area’s most accommodating bike races, offering a comfortable yet challenging event for all skill levels — categories include Century (100 mile) Half Century (50 mile) Metric Century (62 miles) and Fletcher Lite (30-miles). Organizers describe the Fletcher Flyer as the “least hilly ride in WNC” but note the “terrific mountain scenery without the long mountain climbs.” — D.S.

  • More serious (and competitive) cyclists get their kicks at the annual French Broad Cycling Classic, a three-day, multistage event held in Marshall and Asheville. With a road race, time trail and criterium, this professional-style event is undoubtedly the region’s most well-rounded, drawing more than 1000 competitors to vie for the $8800 purse. — D.S.
