Unique Asheville: Activist group

  • Occupy Asheville is less than a year old, but already it’s captured enough of the city’s imagination that it went to the top of reader’s minds as the best activist group in town. Starting last winter, Asheville’s branch of the larger Occupy subculture quickly hit a chord from the city’s longtime protest culture, pulling together old groups and new activists under a single cause. Plenty of clashes and disputes, both internal and external, followed, but Occupy Asheville is still alive and kicking, and a prominent part of the city’s activist culture. — D.F.
